Dutch football icon, Robin van Persie, has dismissed claims of favoritism. He defended his decision to give his son, Shaqueel, his senior debut. This occurred during Feyenoord’s Europa League match against Celtic.
Van Persie, who previously starred for Arsenal and Manchester United, now coaches Feyenoord. He brought the 19-year-old Shaqueel into Thursday’s game in Glasgow in the later stages.
Shaqueel’s Path to Senior Football
Shaqueel spent two years at Manchester City’s academy. He then returned to Feyenoord in 2017. In 2022, he signed his first professional contract. Since then, he has steadily progressed through the club’s youth ranks.
His initial experience with the senior team came just four days prior. He was on the bench for Feyenoord’s Eredivisie loss to NEC Nijmegen.
In Scotland, Van Persie introduced Shaqueel in the 81st minute. Feyenoord was trailing Celtic 2-1 at the time. However, Celtic quickly scored another goal, securing a 3-1 victory.
A Coaching Decision, Not Personal
Van Persie emphasized that family connections played no role. His decision was purely a tactical move to salvage the game.
“I made that call as a coach, not as a dad. We needed a goal,” Van Persie explained after the match. “Shaqueel is a player capable of scoring from various positions. That was my reason for bringing him on.”
Shaqueel had only one attempt in Celtic’s box during his short time on the pitch. Yet, his father affirmed that the teenager earned his chance through consistent hard work.
“As a father, witnessing your son’s debut is always special,” he noted. “However, I was focused on my coaching duties, just as Shaqueel was focused on playing. I view Shaqueel as just another player in the squad. We agreed on this approach years ago when we first started working together. He handles it well, and I believe I do too.”
“Later, at home, we will surely share a proud moment,” Van Persie continued. “I am proud of Shaqueel. Like any player making their debut, it signifies a long journey of hard work and dedication. He deserved this opportunity, and it’s a special milestone for him.”
