Nigerian dancer Roseline Omokhoa Afije, widely known as Liquorose, recently opened up about a significant hurdle in her journey to Big Brother Naija. She revealed how a positive COVID-19 test nearly cost her a spot on the popular reality show in 2020.
This setback deeply affected her. It left her feeling disheartened. She almost abandoned her dream of joining the show.
The 2020 Setback
In 2020, both Liquorose and fellow hopeful contestant, Jaypaul, faced a major disappointment. They tested positive for COVID-19. This diagnosis prevented them from participating in that year’s edition of Big Brother Naija.
Liquorose recalled the painful experience. She was fully prepared for the show’s opening. “In 2020, I was backstage at the BBNaija opening show,” she explained. “I was dressed up and makeup done, but I was not called. That really hurt me.”
The emotional impact was profound. It almost stopped her from trying again. “That experience was messing with me,” she added.
A Second Chance and Triumph
Despite the initial heartbreak, both Liquorose and Jaypaul returned the following year. They decided to audition once more. Liquorose admitted her reluctance. She almost skipped the 2021 auditions.
However, a friend intervened. This friend strongly encouraged her to give it another shot. “So, the following year, I didn’t even want to audition but my friend convinced me to try,” she stated.
She went through the audition process without high expectations. “I just auditioned and forgot about it,” she said. Later, a surprising discovery awaited her. “I just went to check my spam one day and I discovered that I have been selected. It was crazy.”
Her persistence ultimately paid off. Liquorose competed in Big Brother Naija Season 6 (Shine Ya Eye) in 2021. She emerged as the first runner-up, narrowly missing the grand prize to Whitemoney. Her story stands as a testament to resilience and chasing one’s dreams despite unforeseen challenges.
