Nigeria is preparing to host a landmark event. The first African Boxing Congress and a grand Boxing Gala Night will take place in Lagos. The date is set for Sunday, December 28, 2025.
Officials from over twenty national federations across Africa will attend. This event marks a significant step. Many in the boxing community see it as a major boost for African boxing.
The Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF) successfully secured the hosting rights. Honourable Wale Edun leads the NBF. African Boxing, the continent’s official boxing authority, approved Nigeria’s bid. African Boxing operates under World Boxing, the international body for Olympic-style boxing.
In a letter to the NBF, African Boxing praised Nigeria. They described the nation as “strategic.” They noted Nigeria’s “capacity to lead a holistic advancement of the squared ropes sports in the continent.”
The message also confirmed a key appointment. Hon. Omonlei Imadu, NBF Vice President, has joined the African Boxing Working Committee. He will also serve as Head of Organisation for the December congress.
Imadu shared his excitement about the appointment. He also highlighted the event’s potential. He stated, “As a federation, we will do all in our power to host a successful event in December.”
He added, “I am particularly excited to have the congress in Nigeria. It will position both the NBF and our nation as a central point for continental boxing decisions.”
Nigeria’s successful bid brings significant benefits. It strengthens the country’s chances to host the African qualifiers for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. It also creates opportunities for new development programs. These initiatives will boost Olympic-style boxing within Nigeria.
In a further show of confidence, African Boxing made another announcement. Its continental headquarters will be established in Lagos.
