Nasir El-Rufai, the immediate past Governor of Kaduna State, has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC). This political switch comes months after his departure from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
El-Rufai was recently observed signing entry documents. He then collected his ADC membership card. This marks his formal transition to the opposition party, known for its grassroots presence.
Recall that on March 10, 2025, El-Rufai publicly explained his exit from the APC. He cited a growing divergence between his principles and the direction of the party’s leadership as the reason.
“Developments in the last two years confirm a lack of desire,” El-Rufai stated. He added that those controlling the APC do not wish “to acknowledge, much less address the unhealthy situation of the party.”
El-Rufai played a key role in the 2013 opposition merger. This alliance led to the formation of the APC. He also criticized the party for losing its core values.
He reflected on the movement that birthed the APC. He noted that the party’s current structure does not align with its founders’ ideals. The former governor stressed that APC leaders ignored his warnings. These warnings were delivered both internally and in public forums over the past two years.
