Umaru Usman, a butcher from Shelleng Local Government Area in Adamawa State, is now free. He left prison after partly serving a 17-year sentence. The conviction stemmed from a N150,000 debt.
News of his release has circulated widely online.

Why Usman Received His Sentence
The Shelleng Area Court convicted Usman. He faced charges of breach of trust and cheating. He remained at Numan Correctional Centre. A special review panel later intervened.
The Adamawa State Jail Delivery Committee granted his release. Chief Judge Justice Hapsat Abdulrahman heads this committee. They visited the facility. This effort aims to reduce prison overcrowding. It also re-evaluates doubtful or extreme sentences.
The Committee’s Decision on His Release
The committee reviewed his case. They ordered his freedom. He must repay the outstanding N150,000. This sum is due to his creditor.
Usman addressed the committee. He explained his situation. He acquired rams on credit for his business. The agreement was to pay after selling them. He made a partial payment. However, he could not pay the full amount. This led to his arrest. It also resulted in his long prison term.
Usman felt relief to be free. He joined other inmates. Their cases are also under review. The committee continues its work. It intervenes across many correctional centers.
