Babachir Lawal, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, has clarified his absence. He is a close ally of Atiku Abubakar. Lawal missed the former vice president’s formal registration with the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The event took place in Jada, Adamawa State.
Lawal spoke to Punch from his Abuja residence. He explained that Atiku changed the ceremony date. This alteration happened without prior notice. It made his attendance impossible.
“Poor planning by the former vice president” was Lawal’s direct blame. He recounted, “We agreed on Sunday for the event. I arrived in Yola for the ceremony, only for Atiku to shift the event to Monday.”
The former SGF expressed his clear displeasure. He noted Atiku’s decision disrupted his personal schedule significantly.
Lawal stressed the importance of his own commitments. “I have my personal things to handle. I have schedules for my activities,” he stated. He added, “You cannot just change the gear while the car is in motion and expect me to be part of such a programme.”
He also disclosed a warning given to Atiku Abubakar. Lawal advised that his absence could easily be misinterpreted by political observers. However, Atiku, a former PDP presidential candidate and now an ADC member, reportedly dismissed these concerns.
“I told Atiku Abubakar that my absence at the ceremony would give different interpretations to many people concerning our new party,” Lawal recounted. He further added, “But he gave a deaf ear to my advice.”
Lawal distanced himself from the rescheduled event. He concluded, “Let them go ahead and do their thing with his people.”
