Wayne Rooney, the former Manchester United striker, has offered Liverpool manager Arne Slot some candid advice. He suggests Slot should consider benching star player Mohamed Salah. This recommendation comes after Liverpool’s surprising 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
Salah has scored five goals this season. However, he failed to score or assist during the recent match. This performance has raised concerns about his defensive effort. Questions are also being asked about his overall influence on the pitch.
Rooney’s Call for a “Big Decision”
Speaking on his recent podcast, Rooney explained his reasoning. “If I were Slot, I would make a significant decision,” he stated. This action, he believes, would then impact the rest of the team.
Rooney specifically highlighted Salah’s perceived lack of defensive contribution. He questioned the message it sends to other players. Especially those on the bench who observe Salah not tracking back. While acknowledging Salah’s legendary status and achievements for the club, Rooney stressed the need for a strong message regarding team commitment.
Salah’s Past Brilliance and Current Struggles
Last season, the 33-year-old winger enjoyed a stellar run. He made Premier League history. Salah finished with the highest number of goals and assists. He also earned the coveted Player of the Season award.
His exceptional performance coincided with Slot’s inaugural year as manager. During this period, Liverpool secured the league title. This significant achievement followed Jurgen Klopp’s departure.
This current season, however, has proven challenging. Despite a significant summer transfer window, struggles persist. Liverpool invested £241 million to bring in Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak. Yet, they currently sit 11th in the table. They have only 18 points after 12 matches.
Acknowledging Team Hardship
Rooney acknowledged Liverpool’s difficult period. “They are definitely going through a tough time,” he noted. He suggested considering the impact of Diogo Jota’s unfortunate situation. “What effect does that have on his teammates?” he pondered.
However, Rooney insisted that despite challenges, there is no excuse. Players must still show fight and make tackles. His comments underscore the mounting pressure on Liverpool to improve their form and secure better results in the league.
