A witness recently described how several students evaded captors. These students were from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Papiri, Niger State. Bandits had abducted them.
The incident occurred early Friday morning, November 21, 2025. Armed bandits stormed the school premises. They abducted multiple students.
Early Morning Bandit Attack
Reports indicate the attack began around 2 a.m. This event closely followed another abduction. Just four days prior, 24 female students were kidnapped in Maga, Kebbi State.
Witnesses observed numerous bandits. They arrived on motorcycles. They then entered the school compound.
An anonymous local source confirmed initial gunfire. The attackers fired shots upon entry. This aimed to intimidate students and any security staff.
The eyewitness stated bandits operated for hours. They faced no resistance. They then seized a vehicle. Some abducted students were placed inside. Others were transported on motorcycles.
Students Evade Capture
The stolen vehicle subsequently broke down. It was only meters from the school. The attackers abandoned it.
Bandits attempted to locate another vehicle. During this time, several students escaped. Some scaled the school fence. The precise number of missing students remains unknown.
Official Confirmation Received
Alhaji Abubakar Usman, Niger State Government Secretary, confirmed the attack. He noted that officials are verifying the number of pupils abducted.
Usman stated, “The exact number of abducted students is unconfirmed.” Security agencies continue to assess the situation.
Earlier intelligence reports warned of threats. These were in parts of Niger North. The government had ordered temporary school closures.
St. Mary’s School reopened without clearance. This exposed pupils and staff to danger. Usman added that full investigations are underway. Search-and-rescue operations have begun.
Law Enforcement Initiates Rescue
Adamu Abdullahi Ellema confirmed the attack. He is the Niger State Commissioner of Police.
Ellema stated, “Police tactical units, military components, and other security agencies are deployed.” They are combing forests. Their goal is to rescue the abducted students.
Diocese Denounces Abduction
The Catholic Diocese of Kontagora condemned the attack. Father Jatau Luka, Diocesan Secretary, issued a statement. He confirmed the incident occurred between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m.
He added that collaborative efforts are ongoing. Security forces, community leaders, and government officials seek the victims’ release.
The Diocese urged public calm. They asked for support for security efforts. Prayers for the students’ safe return were also requested.
Historical Context of School Kidnappings
Similar attacks have happened previously. Years ago, Government Science College, Kagara, faced a kidnapping. Students and teachers were taken. They were later rescued through a security operation.
