Former President Goodluck Jonathan has strongly criticised individuals. He spoke against those who treat politics as a mere arena for unruly behaviour.
Jonathan voiced his concerns on Thursday. This was at the 10th anniversary dinner of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation. The event also marked his 68th birthday celebration.
He deeply regretted the current state of Nigeria’s democracy. He stated it is being “suffocated” by reckless political conduct. True leadership, he insisted, must be rooted in responsibility, nation-building, and restraint.
Jonathan emphasised that sustaining democratic stability is vital. It demands civility and true accountability from all political participants.
“Politics is not for rascals,” Jonathan declared. “It is for people who want to build, not destroy.” He warned about the growing trend of aggressive rhetoric. This hostile political behaviour, he noted, weakens democratic resilience across Africa.
Jonathan also spoke about his foundation’s origins. Its work over the past decade has focused on several key areas. These include diplomacy, governance reforms, peacebuilding, mediation, and strengthening democratic institutions.
Finally, Jonathan expressed sorrow over recent violence. He mentioned the wave of violent attacks and abductions nationwide. He urged leaders at all levels to prioritise their duty to citizens. They must protect lives and safeguard Nigeria’s democratic order.
