Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Ike Shorunmu has advised the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to immediately start preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations following the team’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
Speaking with Footy-Africa, the ex-international urged football authorities to focus on rebuilding the squad without delay. “I hope the NFF will think ahead and create a solid plan starting with AFCON,” Shorunmu stated. “We must now focus on Nigerian football’s future.”
The 2002 World Cup goalkeeper emphasized the tournament’s proximity, noting: “AFCON is approaching rapidly. Early preparation is crucial to get everything right.” He believes players understand fans’ disappointment and will seek redemption at the Nations Cup.
Shorunmu described Nigeria’s failed World Cup qualification as a national disappointment, criticizing the “sloppy” preparatory process. He stressed that both players and supporters shared frustration over inadequate planning.
“Too many elements weren’t properly handled before the crucial matches,” he observed, urging the federation to prioritize thorough planning for major tournaments.
Upcoming AFCON Matches
The Super Eagles begin their AFCON 2025 campaign against Tanzania on December 23, facing Tunisia on December 27, and concluding group matches against Uganda on December 30 as they pursue a fourth continental title.
