Human rights activist Liborous Oshoma has attributed the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) ongoing crisis to past leaders. He claims these leaders abandoned the party during critical moments. This forced the PDP to seek help from Nyesom Wike.
Wike’s Role in PDP’s Current Turmoil
During an Arise News appearance, Oshoma accused the FCT Minister of destabilizing the opposition. He stated Wike is undermining unity before the 2027 elections. The activist emphasized that former presidents deserted the PDP when it needed them most.
“I wouldn’t start PDP’s crisis from 2023,” Oshoma declared. “Past PDP presidents abandoned the party during its greatest need. When funding dried up, some members mortgaged the party to Ali Modu Sheriff.”
He noted that Atiku Abubakar had exited the party by then. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo had also torn his membership card. This desperation led the PDP to turn to Wike for support.
Consequences of PDP’s Reliance on Wike
Oshoma argued this move effectively “mortgaged the party’s future” to Wike. The Rivers State governor’s influence brought unforeseen consequences. He referenced conflicting rulings from courts in Abuja and Port Harcourt.
“The ping-pong between federal courts shows something is fundamentally wrong,” Oshoma observed. He also criticized Wike’s pattern of turning against allies. “First, he demanded Uche Secondus’ removal, then opposed Atiku Abubakar.”
“Later, he supported Acting Chairman Damagum before turning against him. This cycle must stop,” Oshoma insisted.
Legal Battles and Party Convention Fallout
Regarding the Ibadan convention disputes, Oshoma condemned contradictory court orders. He called it “sad and unfortunate” that courts of equal jurisdiction issued clashing rulings. Such situations force parties to selectively obey judgments.
“The last order from Oyo State was followed,” he noted. “This allowed the convention to proceed amid legal confusion.” Oshoma’s analysis highlights deep structural issues within Nigeria’s main opposition party.
