President Bola Tinubu has commended the Super Eagles for their resilient performance against DR Congo in the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff, despite Nigeria’s elimination following a dramatic penalty shootout on Sunday.
Nigeria’s World Cup aspirations ended at Rabat’s Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium after a 1-1 draw stretched to extra time. DR Congo secured a 4-3 penalty victory to advance to the intercontinental playoff.
The Super Eagles took an early lead when Frank Onyeka scored in the third minute. DR Congo equalized through M. Elia in the 32nd minute. Extra time saw both teams create chances, including Tolu Arokodare’s missed header and Stanley Nwabali’s crucial free-kick save.
During penalties, Nigeria missed two kicks through Calvin Bassey and Moses Simon. Despite Nwabali saving DR Congo’s first attempt, the Congolese converted their remaining penalties to secure victory.
This defeat marks Nigeria’s second consecutive World Cup absence, while DR Congo moves closer to qualifying for the expanded 48-team tournament across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Tinubu Urges Football Overhaul
In a Monday statement via Special Adviser Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu urged Nigerians to look beyond the disappointment: “Despite the loss, we must commend the players’ efforts and continue supporting them.”
The President called for immediate reforms: “We must plug all loopholes. Football administrators, coaches, players, and stakeholders need to return to the drawing board for critical self-assessment.”
AFCON 2026 Focus
Tinubu redirected attention to the upcoming African Cup of Nations in Morocco: “Now we focus all efforts on AFCON 2026. Our Super Eagles must reclaim their lost glory.”
The President praised the team’s determination throughout the playoff series and during the high-pressure shootout, encouraging fans to maintain support despite the heartbreak.
