Former Niger State Governor Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu has applauded the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) expulsion of Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike. Aliyu characterized the move as eliminating a “cancer” that had paralyzed the opposition party.
The former governor made these remarks at the 6th Zik’s Awards Lecture in Abuja. The event honored the 121st posthumous birthday of Nigeria’s first President, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe.
Aliyu expressed hope for the PDP’s revival following Wike’s removal. He stated: “Like surgeons, we remove a cancer crippling our party. With this excision, the party can now progress. Nigerians deserve viable political alternatives.”
Warning Against One-Party Dominance
The former governor cautioned about Nigeria’s political direction. He warned against transforming into a single-party state. Aliyu emphasized: “Creating a one-party state would be catastrophic. Nigeria must maintain political alternatives for democracy.”
Aliyu stressed that robust opposition benefits Nigeria’s democracy. He believes the PDP can now rebuild. The party must provide Nigerians with credible choices.
