Troy Deeney has reignited his feud with Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong, describing the Nigerian defender as “insecure” following their public clash over the national team’s bonus dispute.
The former Watford striker previously criticized Troost-Ekong’s leadership during the players’ strike before Nigeria’s 4-1 win against Gabon. Players refused training to demand outstanding payments from the Nigeria Football Federation. Deeney contended the captain should have managed the protest more assertively.
Deeney remains unapologetic about his comments. Speaking to talkSPORT, he stated: “What did I say that’s not respectful? I said exactly what he is – he is a good kid.” He added: “He gave me a shirt, yes, I collect shirts.”
Deeney Questions Captain’s Authority
The ex-Premier League forward argued Troost-Ekong lacks necessary authority. “When someone tells the truth, it hurts,” Deeney remarked. “If I offend you, Will, deal with it. I know you – any disrespect would be delivered properly.”
Deeney, who never played for England despite extensive top-flight experience, suggested Troost-Ekong’s response revealed personal insecurities. “You aren’t that secure yourself,” he commented. Deeney advised the captain: “Chill, Nigeria won. Focus on your podcast while we handle media.”
