Nigeria’s football community is grieving the loss of Lawrence Onweazu Okonji, a revered former striker for the national team who passed away at 83. As one of the Green Eagles’ pioneering players, Okonji first joined the squad in 1963 and proudly represented Nigeria for ten years.

During his international career, Okonji shared the pitch with Nigerian football greats. His teammates included Joseph Erico, Peter Anieke, Paul Hamilton, and Sebastian Brodricks. These players later shaped Nigerian football in coaching roles. Hamilton managed the Super Eagles, while Brodricks led Nigeria’s U-16 team to victory at the 1985 World Cup.
Historic Football Moments
Fans remember Okonji for his energetic performances in key international matches. His appearances against England’s Queens Park Rangers and Germany’s Fortuna Düsseldorf left lasting impressions. A career highlight came on June 6, 1973. Okonji scored the final goal at Lagos City Stadium during a friendly between NEPA and Stationery Stores. This iconic strike marked the symbolic closure of the historic venue.
Club Career and Coaching Legacy
Okonji played for several prominent Nigerian clubs during his career. His journey included stints with Sharks, NEPA Lagos, Port Authority Lagos, and Aba Giant Killers (now Enyimba). He also represented Lagos State at Nigeria’s inaugural National Sports Festival in 1973.
After retiring, Okonji transitioned into coaching. He managed teams including NEPA FC Lagos, Guinness FC, and Lagos Academicals. His expertise extended internationally with Benin Republic’s Requins de l’Atlantique. He also guided Delta Force (formerly DSC FC). Okonji’s enduring legacy spans generations of Nigerian football.
