The Edo State Government has denounced recent misinformation campaigns targeting Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration. Officials specifically refuted claims made by Anthony Aziegbemi, factional chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State. The government characterized these statements as deliberate falsehoods distorting governance processes.
In an official statement, Governor Okpebholo’s Chief Press Secretary Fred Itua stated Aziegbemi’s remarks revealed “a clear gap in understanding administrative procedure.” The government expressed disappointment that the PDP chairman chose to spread inaccuracies rather than engage in constructive governance dialogue.
Tender Board Procedures Clarified
The government strongly countered Aziegbemi’s comments about the Tender Board operations. “The Tender Board is a statutory body with defined roles under Nigerian procurement laws,” Itua emphasized. “It operates independently of political parties and isn’t subject to emotional interpretations by party officials.”
Officials explained that each ministry maintains its own Tenders Board composed of the Commissioner, Permanent Secretary, and Directors. These boards evaluate contracts within established thresholds. The apex body remains the State Executive Council, comprising the Governor, Deputy Governor, SSG, and Commissioners.
Criticism of Previous Administration
The statement condemned the previous administration’s demolition of Benin City’s century-old Central Hospital. Officials called this “one of the most reckless decisions” that replaced a vital health facility with the privately-run Museum of West African Art (MOWAA). This project, the government noted, lacked relevance to citizens’ healthcare needs.
The administration dismissed PDP’s claimed achievements as unverifiable. These included an Agricultural Hub, Tayo Akpata Education Hub, and sporadic free WiFi services. “These were slogan-heavy projects with minimal substance,” Itua stated. “None delivered measurable improvements for Edo citizens.”
New Governance Approach
Governor Okpebholo’s administration highlighted its focus on tangible development. Current priorities include road rehabilitation, healthcare strengthening, and education investment. The statement emphasized a “real projects, real impact, real accountability” philosophy contrasting with past practices.
“Edo people deserve substance, not propaganda,” officials asserted. They vowed to continue reforms despite opposition commentary. The administration remains committed to transparency and measurable outcomes that directly benefit citizens.
