Erling Haaland demonstrated his goal-scoring prowess once again on Saturday, netting twice in the second half to secure a 2-0 victory for Manchester City against Everton at the Etihad Stadium. This crucial win temporarily elevated Pep Guardiola’s team to the top of the Premier League standings, pending the outcome of Arsenal’s subsequent match against Fulham.
Haaland, who recently notched a hat-trick for Norway during the international break, continued his fine form by bringing his tally to an impressive 23 goals in just 13 matches across both club and international competitions this season. The first half saw Everton effectively contain City’s attacking threats, with Iliman Ndiaye posing a constant threat and nearly capitalizing on a misplaced pass from Nathan Ake, though his teammate Beto arrived too late to convert. Ndiaye also forced a fine save from goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma with a powerful strike.
The match dynamics shifted significantly after the break. Haaland, who had been relatively quiet in the first half, broke the deadlock by powerfully heading home a cross from Nico O’Reilly, leaving goalkeeper Jordan Pickford with no chance. Just five minutes later, the Norwegian striker doubled his tally, slotting home a low cross from Savinho that took a deflection off defender James Tarkowski, wrong-footing Pickford once more.
In other Premier League action, Sunderland continued their impressive start to the season with a confident 2-0 victory over Wolves at the Stadium of Light. French international Nordi Mukiele opened the scoring after a clever one-two with Trai Hume, slotting past Sam Johnstone. Wolves attempted to mount a response after halftime but struggled to break down a resolute Sunderland defense. Their frustrations were compounded in stoppage time when defender Ladislav Krejci inadvertently turned the ball into his own net.
The result propelled Sunderland to seventh place, marking their strongest home start to a top-flight campaign since the 1968-1969 season. In contrast, Wolves remain winless in their last eight matches, rooted to the bottom of the table.
