Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has publicly opposed the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) decision to proceed with its National Convention scheduled for November 15-16 in Ibadan. Saraki cited conflicting court orders as creating unacceptable uncertainty about the convention’s legitimacy.
In a significant policy shift, Saraki withdrew his support for the event. He instead urged PDP leadership to establish a caretaker committee. This committee would temporarily manage party affairs. It would resolve internal conflicts before any convention takes place.
The former Kwara State Governor emphasized political solutions over legal battles. He stated court orders cannot effectively resolve deep-rooted party disputes. Saraki advocated for inclusive roundtable discussions. These would address grievances within the PDP.
Saraki expressed frustration about derailed reconciliation efforts. He noted some members worked to stabilize the party. However, conflicting interests undermined their progress. This has created ongoing instability.
Saraki’s Formal Statement
On 12 November 2025, I met with the PDP Board of Trustees Reconciliation Team. We discussed critical party matters, particularly the upcoming convention. I expressed deep regret that the event is now entangled in political and legal controversies.
Political matters cannot be resolved through courts. They require dialogue. Conflicting court orders create doubt about the convention’s validity. I cannot support any action jeopardizing my supporters’ aspirations.
My firm recommendation is establishing a Caretaker Committee immediately. This committee must form within 48 hours. It provides the path to genuine reconciliation and stability. Serious politicians need certainty about electoral nominations.
Proceeding with the Ibadan convention will worsen our crisis. The planned event is now a waste of effort. I withdraw my support entirely. A win-win solution remains possible through alternative approaches.
Saraki concluded that holding the convention under current conditions would be counterproductive. He warned it could further fracture Nigeria’s main opposition party. The PDP faces mounting pressure to postpone the event.
