Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has declared Nigeria’s readiness to contain Gabon’s star forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang when the teams clash in the 2026 World Cup playoff semi-final on Thursday in Morocco.
Nigeria, Gabon, Cameroon, and DR Congo reached this crucial stage as the best second-placed teams from the qualifying groups. The victors of both semi-finals will advance to Sunday’s final, with the winner progressing to the intercontinental playoffs in March 2026.
Troost-Ekong acknowledged Aubameyang’s threat but emphasized Nigeria’s preparedness. The defender stated: “Gabon presents a strong challenge. Aubameyang consistently troubles defenders with his leadership and attacking prowess. Having faced him in Saudi Arabia, I understand his capabilities.”
The Nigerian skipper added: “In African football, no opponent can be underestimated. We approach the Gabon match with full seriousness.”
Aubameyang remains Gabon’s primary offensive weapon. The 36-year-old veteran has scored seven goals in five qualifying matches. The former Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund striker currently plays for Olympique Marseille in France’s Ligue 1.
Troost-Ekong reflected on Nigeria’s qualification journey: “Failing to secure direct qualification was disappointing. The initial rounds proved challenging as we played catch-up. Nevertheless, reaching the playoffs represents a significant accomplishment.”
Historical Edge for Super Eagles
Nigeria enjoys a favorable historical record against Gabon. In their nine previous encounters, the Super Eagles have secured five victories and three draws. Gabon’s solitary win occurred on June 25, 1989 – a 2-1 result that famously denied Nigeria qualification for the 1990 World Cup in Italy.
