Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has declared that resolving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) crisis requires confronting deep-rooted “leadership decay” at its highest levels. The outspoken politician likened the party’s condition to a fish rotting from the head, suggesting the damage may be irreversible without fundamental leadership changes.
“When fish decays from the body, you can salvage it. But when decay starts from the head, recovery becomes impossible,” Fayose stated. “Currently, the PDP has decayed from the head.” He emphasized his consistent warnings about the party’s weakening structures and internal divisions.
Defections Confirm Earlier Predictions
Fayose revealed his previous predictions about PDP governors defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are materializing. “After my visit here three weeks ago, Governor Diri left. He chaired the PDP campaign screening committee before departing. The Governor of Enugu also exited,” he noted. “Now the Taraba Governor has been handed over to APC leadership.”
Despite his criticism, Fayose reaffirmed his PDP loyalty while acknowledging the party’s perilous state: “I’ve never deceived Nigerians about PDP’s troubles. I remain a party member and support the President as a Yoruba man. But PDP is in deep crisis.”
Plateau Governor Next to Exit
The former governor warned of imminent further defections, specifically naming Plateau State’s governor as the next to abandon PDP. “Another governor will leave very soon. Plateau’s governor is departing,” Fayose declared. “After Plateau, yet another governor will exit. I’ll confirm this when I return.”
Fayose’s statements highlight the deepening fragmentation within Nigeria’s main opposition party as key figures increasingly align with the ruling APC.
