Spain’s Euro 2024 qualifying campaign has suffered an unexpected setback with Barcelona prodigy Lamine Yamal withdrawing from the national squad. The 16-year-old winger’s departure follows a medical procedure conducted without the team’s prior knowledge.
The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) expressed surprise after discovering Yamal underwent radiofrequency treatment for pubic discomfort on November 10. This coincided with Spain’s scheduled training camp opening. Federation officials stated their medical team only learned about the procedure that afternoon.
“We were caught off guard when learning at 13:47 on Monday about Yamal’s same-morning medical intervention,” the RFEF confirmed. “The treatment occurred without consulting our medical staff.”
Medical reports later recommended seven to ten days’ recovery, prompting Spain to release the teenager. Yamal will now miss crucial qualifiers against Georgia and Turkey. The federation emphasized player welfare as their priority, wishing him a full recovery.
Slovenia faces similar disruption with striker Benjamin Sesko ruled out through injury. The Slovenian Football Association confirmed receiving medical documentation detailing the forward’s condition after he suffered the setback during club duty.
“Sesko’s injury prevents participation in training,” the association stated. “His club plans further examinations and treatment in coming days.” This development sidelines Sesko for Slovenia’s upcoming matches, with officials wishing him a swift return to action.
