Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, alongside their technical staff, boycotted training in Rabat on Tuesday. The protest centers on unresolved bonus payments and allowances dating back to 2019 that remain outstanding.
The squad withheld participation to demand payment of earned bonuses. These include financial rewards for qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and reaching the World Cup play-offs.
BBC Sports journalist Oluwashina Okeleji reported the team awaits swift resolution. Players hope to resume preparations for Thursday’s crucial match against Gabon.
Okeleji revealed no players received allocated bonuses. He described widespread frustration among squad members tired of repeated unmet promises.
A team statement confirmed the collective action. It read: “The full squad withheld training due to unresolved payment issues.”
The statement emphasized their desire for quick resolution. This would allow proper preparation for the upcoming Gabon fixture.
Sports photojournalist Sulaimon Adebayo verified the boycott. His reports confirmed players refused training until payment matters are addressed.
Rabat camp currently hosts 23 players. Key figures include captain William Troost-Ekong and forwards Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman.
Other notable forwards include Moses Simon, Chidera Ejuke, and Alex Iwobi. Samuel Chukwueze and Akor Adams complete the attacking options.
Defensive duties fall to Calvin Bassey and Chidozie Awaziem. Semi Ajayi also strengthens the backline alongside midfielders Wilfred Ndidi.
Frank Onyeka and Raphael Onyedika complete the midfield corps. Goalkeeper Maduka Okoye remains absent despite improved form with Udinese.
The Eagles conducted their first full session on Monday. Coach Eric Chelle intensified preparations with 14 available players.
Sevilla’s Akor Adams and Chidera Ejuke missed Monday’s session. Ademola Lookman’s afternoon arrival boosted attacking alternatives for Chelle.
Team officials opened the Morocco camp on Sunday. Technical staff received early arrivals at Rabat’s Rive Hotel.
