A significant upset occurred during the Anambra governorship election on Saturday. The Labour Party (LP) faced an unexpected loss in the polling unit of its national leader, Peter Obi. This is the unit where Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate, previously commanded overwhelming support.
At Polling Unit 019, Agulu Ward 11, in Anaocha Local Government Area, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Nicholas Ukachukwu, emerged victorious. He secured 73 votes. Ukachukwu defeated the LP candidate, George Moghalu, who received 57 votes.
The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate finished third in this particular unit with 38 votes.
Peter Obi had cast his ballot earlier at the same unit. Local residents had anticipated a strong Labour Party performance there. In the 2023 elections, Obi won over 95 percent of the votes in this community. The recent outcome is therefore particularly noteworthy.

APC Also Wins in Governor Soludo’s Polling Unit
In a related development, the APC candidate, Nicholas Ukachukwu, also recorded another significant victory. He won in the polling unit of the incumbent governor, Professor Charles Soludo. These early results are continuing to trickle in across the state, indicating potential shifts.
At Umudimala 1, Polling Unit 011, Osumenyi Ward 2, Nnewi South Local Government Area, Ukachukwu cast his vote at 11:46 a.m. According to Esther Ojukwu, the INEC presiding officer, Ukachukwu polled 126 votes in that unit.
Governor Soludo, who is also seeking re-election, managed to secure only six votes at his own unit. These outcomes from key polling units signal a potentially challenging election for the ruling party in Anambra. More results are awaited.
