Bayern Munich’s flawless start to the Bundesliga season has come to an end. The German giants played a thrilling 2-2 draw with Union Berlin on Saturday. This intense match took place at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei.
Union Berlin’s Danilho Doekhi was the star for his side, scoring twice. For Bayern Munich, Luis Díaz and Harry Kane found the back of the net. Bayern had entered the game unbeaten in the first half of any match this season.
Early Goals Set the Tone
The home team struck first. Doekhi’s header from a corner kick slipped past Manuel Neuer. This goal ended Bayern’s impressive run of first-half clean sheets. The champions, who had started calmly, suddenly found themselves trailing.
It did not take long for Díaz to respond. He produced a moment of pure brilliance. Josip Stanišić sent a pass that seemed to be going out of bounds. But Díaz remarkably kept it in play on the byline. He then spun past his marker and unleashed a powerful shot. The strike hit the near post, leaving the Union goalkeeper stunned. This was the Colombian’s third goal in two games, and arguably his finest yet.
Dramatic Second Half Unfolds
Union Berlin, however, remained determined. In the final minutes of normal time, England international Kane unintentionally flicked on a free-kick. The ball went straight to Doekhi. He calmly converted it past Neuer for his second goal of the afternoon. This put Union back in the lead.
Yet, Kane quickly made amends. Deep into stoppage time, Bayern pressed relentlessly. Tom Bischof delivered a tempting cross into the box. The England striker rose highest. He headed home the equalizer in the 93rd minute. This marked his 13th goal of the season.
Impact on Bayern’s Season
This draw means Bayern could not match their club record. They aimed for ten straight league wins to start a campaign. Their lead at the top of the Bundesliga table has now reduced. It dropped from seven points to six.
Before this result, the Bavarians had won all 16 of their matches. This included all competitions. It was the best start ever by a men’s team in Europe’s top five leagues. This incredible streak has now come to an end.
Bayern will seek to return to winning ways. They host Freiburg on November 22. Union Berlin will travel to Hamburg. They face St. Pauli the following day.
