Nicholas Ukachukwu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Anambra, has voiced significant concerns. He alleged widespread vote buying and intimidation of his party’s agents during the ongoing election across the state.
The candidate described the rising instances of vote buying as a grave threat to Nigeria’s democracy. He attributed blame to both those who buy votes and those who sell them.
“If there’s no seller, there cannot be a buyer,” Ukachukwu stated. He added, “Some people have chosen to sell their conscience. This is even worse than those buying votes. When you give up your right for money, you lose your voice as a citizen. You can’t cry later. Society must also be blamed for encouraging this.”
Ukachukwu further alleged that one of his party’s agents suffered an assault while monitoring the election. He described this act as clear intimidation, aimed at disrupting their participation in the electoral process.
“There have been incidents where people are being beaten up,” he explained. “It’s a form of bullying. Though it may seem right to some today, power changes hands. God gives power to whomever He chooses.”
The APC candidate maintained that such attacks undermine the integrity of the election. They also discourage active citizen participation in politics.
Security Situation in Ihiala
When questioned about the security situation in Ihiala, an area previously identified as a potential flashpoint, Ukachukwu reported no major violence so far. “So far, there’s been no report of any death or serious unrest,” he confirmed.
He acknowledged that elections often come with heightened tensions. However, he noted that the situation in Ihiala remained largely calm as voting continued.
