Nigeria’s national team coach Eric Chelle has revealed that the Super Eagles’ performance in next week’s crucial 2026 World Cup playoffs will significantly influence their quest for victory at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. According to Chelle, winning the continental championship remains his top priority.
The Super Eagles endured a challenging qualifying campaign, failing to win their first four matches. This resulted in them missing automatic qualification for the World Cup. Nigeria must now navigate the African playoffs to keep their global tournament dreams alive.
Nigeria will confront Gabon in next Thursday’s semi-final showdown. A victory could lead to a decisive final against either DR Congo or Cameroon. This matchup will determine who advances to the inter-continental stage.
Coach Chelle emphasized the constant pressure his squad faces. He told CAFOnline, “Since March, we’ve played every match under intense scrutiny. When we arrive in Morocco, that pressure will feel familiar. We’ll be mentally prepared with collective focus. Playoff success would make us formidable opponents.”
“Our immediate priority is winning the World Cup playoffs. After clearing those hurdles, we’ll shift full attention to AFCON,” Chelle explained. “Coaching Nigeria demands victory in every competition. But we maintain humility while working hard. With exceptional talent and unity, nothing is impossible for this squad.”
Should Nigeria advance through the playoffs, Chelle will concentrate on AFCON preparations. The tournament runs from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026. Nigeria last claimed the AFCON trophy in 2013. They narrowly lost the previous final to hosts Ivory Coast.
When asked about tournament objectives, Chelle stated, “Victory is our clear target. I personally want to win AFCON. Morocco promises an exceptional tournament. Our players share this ambition completely.”
