Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has declared that Nigeria’s performance in the crucial 2026 World Cup playoffs will significantly shape their pursuit of victory at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Chelle prioritizes winning the continental title. Yet he acknowledges this ambition could falter if Nigeria fails to advance through the inter-continental playoffs. Keeping World Cup hopes alive remains essential.
Nigeria endured a challenging qualifying campaign. They remained winless in their first four matches. This cost them automatic qualification for the tournament across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The African playoffs now represent their only pathway forward.
The Super Eagles face Gabon in a semi-final clash next Thursday. Victory could set up a decisive final against either DR Congo or Cameroon. The winner secures a ticket to the inter-continental stage.
Chelle’s Blueprint for Success
“We’ve operated under constant pressure since March,” Chelle told CAFOnline. “This experience prepares us for Morocco. We’ll arrive mentally ready and united. Playoff success would make us formidable.”
He emphasized dual objectives: “Before AFCON, we must conquer the World Cup playoffs. Beat Gabon first, then the next opponent. We’re building towards both tournaments simultaneously. But immediate focus stays on these critical matches.”
“Coaching Nigeria demands excellence. We pursue victory in everything. Yet we maintain humility and dedication. This squad possesses exceptional talent. With unity and motivation, nothing is beyond reach.”
Successful playoff navigation would allow Chelle to fully focus on AFCON 2025. The tournament runs from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.
Nigeria last claimed the African title in 2013. They narrowly lost the previous final to hosts Ivory Coast.
AFCON Victory the Ultimate Target
When questioned about Morocco 2025 ambitions, Chelle responded: “Winning AFCON is our clear objective. Personally, I’m determined to lift the trophy. My debut tournament was remarkable. Morocco promises another spectacular event. The players share this vision completely.”
