Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca attributed his team’s 2-2 draw against Qarabag FK to exhaustion from their recent FIFA Club World Cup campaign. Speaking after Wednesday’s Champions League clash in Baku, Maresca explained the physical toll necessitated squad rotation.
Chelsea’s Fixture Fatigue
“The Club World Cup significantly impacted us,” Maresca stated. Rotation became unavoidable with key players needing rest. Moisés Caicedo, Enzo Fernández, and Malo Gusto were among those Maresca planned to rest.
Chelsea started strongly with 17-year-old Estevao Willian scoring in the 16th minute. Qarabag responded before halftime through Leandro Andrade and Marko Jankovic. Alejandro Garnacho’s second-half equalizer salvaged a point for the Blues.
The reigning Club World Cup champions now regroup for their Premier League match against Wolves. Their packed schedule continues to test squad depth.
Haaland’s Historic Achievement
Meanwhile, Erling Haaland made Champions League history during Manchester City’s 4-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund. The Norwegian striker scored alongside Phil Foden’s brace and Rayan Cherki’s goal.
Haaland achieved a unique milestone. He became the first player to score in five consecutive UCL matches for three different clubs. This spans Manchester City, Borussia Dortmund, and Red Bull Salzburg.
His season tally now stands at 27 goals in just 17 appearances. Teammate Jeremy Doku praised Haaland’s impact. “Erling’s numbers are unbelievable,” Doku remarked. “He offers far more than goals and assists.”
Haaland now trails Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen by one goal in the current Champions League scoring charts.
