The National Chairman of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), Agbo Gilbert Major, has accused former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso of treating the party as a bargaining chip for his personal political ambitions.
Kwankwaso flew the NNPP banner as its presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections. He is now slated to run as the vice‑presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in the forthcoming 2027 elections.
Major’s Comments on Kwankwaso’s Campaign Strategy
During a recent interview, Major explained that he was not involved in the decisions surrounding Kwankwaso’s activities. He said:
“As the image maker of the party, I was not part of what they were doing.
And at a point when I raised the alarm, it never appeared to me as if Kwankwaso was running for any election. He visited a few states while other candidates were campaigning, then he abandoned the entire Southeast, the entire Southwest, and all of that.
He only went to Kano. So it became clear to me that his interest was Kano, and perhaps part of Jigawa state.
But the truth is that he only used the party as a bargaining chip for himself. That’s exactly what happened.”
Major added that the NNPP remains active and has just completed the upload of its National Assembly candidates and its presidential nominee for the upcoming election cycle.
