Chelsea Agree British Record Fee for Morgan Rogers
Chelsea are on the brink of completing a British record transfer for Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers after the England international reported for a medical on July 20. The proposed fee of £117 million would surpass any previous deal involving a British club.
According to Sky Sports, Rogers is expected to sign a six‑year contract with an option to extend for a further 12 months, potentially keeping him at Stamford Bridge until 2033, subject to passing his medical.
Rogers’ Return and Chelsea’s Decisive Move
The 23‑year‑old returned from the United States on Sunday having helped England finish third at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Chelsea acted quickly to beat Arsenal to his signature after the Gunners refused to meet Villa’s asking price, despite identifying Rogers as their primary attacking target.
Aston Villa Respond with Joao Gomes Capture
Morgan Rogers’ departure triggers a midfield overhaul at Villa Park. The club has already announced the signing of Brazil international Joao Gomes from Wolves in a deal worth up to £38 million, comprising an initial £34 million payment plus £4 million in performance‑related add‑ons.
Gomes, 25, had also attracted interest from Atlético Madrid but left Wolves’ pre‑season camp in Portugal last week to complete his medical before finalising the move to Villa. He becomes Villa’s second high‑profile midfield arrival this week, following the £50 million-plus acquisition of Johan Manzambi from Freiburg.
Context: Villa’s Midfield Shake‑Up
Villa’s transfer activity comes after a difficult spell in the middle of the park. Amadou Onana remains sidelined until next year with a serious knee injury sustained on World Cup duty with Belgium, while Youri Tielemans has been sold to Manchester United for £35 million.
During his time at Wolves, Joao Gomes made 130 appearances and scored seven goals since joining from Flamengo in 2023. He featured 41 times last season as Wolves suffered relegation after finishing bottom of the Premier League.
