William Troost-Ekong Eyes Football Administration After Retirement
Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has announced his intention to pursue a career in football administration once he hangs up his boots.
The defender, who ended his international career in 2025 after 83 caps, said he is already preparing through educational programmes run by the English Football Association.
Speaking to Brila FM, Ekong explained that while many ask him about coaching, his ambition lies in the boardroom.
He believes former players should occupy leadership positions in federations, FIFA, CAF and the NFF to bring about meaningful change.
Ekong acknowledged the political nature of African football administration but argued that ex‑players possess the on‑field insight needed to drive progress if given the chance.
He pointed to role models such as Andriy Shevchenko, Samuel Eto’o and Zico, who successfully transitioned into administrative roles after their playing days.
During his playing career, Ekong represented Nigeria at the 2016 Olympics, the 2018 World Cup and several Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, captaining the Super Eagles to a runner‑up finish at AFCON 2023, where he was named the competition’s best player.
His comments come amid ongoing debates about the state of football governance in Nigeria following the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
