Nigeria secured qualification for the 2026 African Volleyball Nations Cup after defeating Benin Republic 3‑1 in the Zone 3 qualifiers held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire on July 17.
After losing the opening set 21‑25, the Nigerian side rallied to win the next three sets 25‑21, 25‑15 and 25‑20, clinching the match and preserving their flawless record in the qualifiers.
The victory gave Nigeria four straight wins, having previously overcome Niger Republic, host Ivory Coast and Togo, while handing Benin Republic its first loss of the tournament.
Federation President Praises Progress
Nigerian Volleyball Federation president Musa Nimrod hailed the result as a sign of steady growth in the sport, pointing out that both the men’s and women’s national teams have already secured qualification for their respective continental championships.
“We are delighted with the steady growth of volleyball in Nigeria. Our recent qualification for the competition in Congo and the qualification of our women’s team for Kenya are clear signs that the sport is moving in the right direction,” Nimrod said.
He added that attention has now turned to the Under‑19 boys’ team, which is preparing for an upcoming competition in Egypt, and requested prayers and support as they work to overcome remaining challenges.
Nimrod also thanked the media for helping raise the profile of volleyball in the country, noting that their coverage has projected the federation in a positive light.
Nigeria will conclude the Zone 3 qualifying campaign against Burkina Faso later today, July 18.
