French football manager Patrick Vieira has been dismissed by Serie A club Genoa following a disastrous start to the season, with the team failing to secure a single league victory across nine matches.
The club announced the decision in an official statement on Saturday, acknowledging Vieira’s professionalism during his tenure. “Genoa CFC announces that Patrick Vieira is no longer the head coach,” read the statement. “The club thanks him and his staff for their dedication and wishes them success in future endeavors.”
Mutual Agreement Ends Brief Tenure
Sources close to the former Arsenal captain revealed the 49-year-old’s departure resulted from mutual agreement after discussions on Friday night. Vieira leaves with Genoa rooted at the bottom of Serie A, having collected just three points from nine matches.
Genoa’s Dire League Performance
The Italian club suffered six defeats and three draws in Serie A this season. Their only competitive wins came in the Coppa Italia, highlighting stark contrast with their league struggles. Roberto Murgita now assumes temporary leadership, assisted by former captain Domenico Criscito, while Genoa searches for a permanent manager.
Vieira’s Short-Lived Impact
Appointed in November 2024, Vieira initially stabilized Genoa, lifting them from 17th to 13th position last season. His early promise faded quickly this campaign as results deteriorated dramatically. The World Cup-winning former midfielder previously managed Crystal Palace, Nice, and New York City FC before joining the Italian side.
