In a significant political development, Senator Benson Konbowei, who represents Bayelsa Central Senatorial District, has officially switched his allegiance from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Senator Konbowei announced his decision in a formal letter, explaining that he had been a loyal member of the PDP since 1998 but felt compelled to leave due to the deepening crisis and leadership failures within the party.
He stated, “After due consultation with my family, my associates, my political leaders in my state, and across the nation, I have resolved to join the governor of my state, Sen. Douye Diri, to resign my membership of the party.”
According to him, the PDP had deteriorated to the extent that it could no longer effectively compete even in grassroots elections.
Konbowei further stated, “I have lost hope in the capacity of my party to play the role of a political party that is capable of winning councilorship elections in Nigeria.”
The Bayelsa lawmaker described the PDP as a party in decline, lacking the principles and values it once promised Nigerians.
He added, “The PDP has become characterised by eternal power struggles, irreconcilable conflicts and, at the moment, is in total disarray. No politician will sit and wait for those issues to be resolved, even as the 2027 elections beckon.”
Declaring his total allegiance to his new political platform, Konbowei said he was left with no other choice but to move.
“Accordingly, it has left me with no option but to resign from that party. So, I hereby resign my membership of the PDP and hereby declare my total loyalty, support and movement to the APC,” he declared.
