The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has summoned an emergency meeting of its National Working Committee (NWC). This urgent session responds to a Federal High Court ruling that halted the party’s planned national convention.
Justice Omotosho’s Friday judgment suspended the November 15-16 convention in Ibadan. The court found PDP violated procedural rules and ordered reorganization.
The judge mandated that PDP issue the statutory 21-day notice. This follows a lawsuit filed by three PDP members challenging convention preparations.
The plaintiffs include Austin Nwachukwu (Imo PDP chairman), Amah Nnanna (Abia PDP chairman), and Turnah George (South-South PDP Secretary). They alleged constitutional breaches in convention arrangements.
An anonymous NWC member confirmed the emergency Saturday meeting. It will occur at PDP’s Wadata Plaza headquarters in Abuja.
The official stated leaders would review the court’s decision. They will determine the party’s next steps following the legal setback.
“That’s the judgment. However, I know the NWC has summoned an emergency meeting tomorrow. Leaders will review what transpired and determine our response.
The party is set for serious deliberations. This will shape our next steps and provide direction for Nigerians.”
PDP National Chairman Umar Damagum condemned the ruling. He called it a democratic setback and promised immediate appeal.
“This isn’t what we expected. We’ll appeal immediately. You cannot stop a political party from exercising legal rights.
This judgment threatens democracy in Nigeria.”
