Dachung Bagos, a former lawmaker representing Jos South/East Federal Constituency, has expressed strong doubts about the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) prospects for the 2027 general elections.
Bagos noted that PDP members in Jos, Plateau State, are currently awaiting direction from Governor Caleb Mutfwang. Their next course of action depends on whether the PDP can resolve its internal issues before the upcoming polls.
Criticism of Party Procedures
The former lawmaker also criticized the suspension and expulsion procedures used during the party’s convention in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. He argued that the party failed to establish a disciplinary committee before taking such actions against members.
“For now, the leader of the ‘Plateau People’s Party,’ His Excellency Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, will guide us,” Bagos stated. “We are waiting for his direction. This will determine which registered party we will join if the PDP fails to fix itself before the election.”
He continued, “Definitely, we will hear from him. But for now, we must tell ourselves the truth.” Bagos emphasized his lack of optimism for the party’s future.
“I don’t see any light at the end of the tunnel for the PDP,” he declared, specifically regarding the general election. “This is especially true for anyone considering contesting.”
Flawed Internal Processes
Bagos highlighted two key issues that arose within a short period.
Firstly, only one form was sold for the chairmanship election. A court later ruled that due process was not followed in this instance.
Secondly, he pointed out the absence of a disciplinary committee before suspensions or expulsions occurred. Instead, actions were taken via a voice vote during the convention.
“When due process is not adhered to, those contesting elections should think carefully,” Bagos advised. “They need to analyze issues, consult with their people, and find a way forward.”
“We should not be political with the truth,” he added. “I have always told my people the truth. So, as it stands, I don’t see the light at the end of the tunnel for the PDP.”
